Ensemble Stars is a mobile app game, with a manga adaptation as well as other media adaptations. The game started off as a mobile game though and in the game you play as “Anzu” (Or the name you assign yourself), you are added to the boy’s only idol school to perform as a producer for the various units and idols. With this you help prepare them for performances and help setup “Lives” for them to perform. In the game you collect the cards of these boys to help do this. All of this is in the effort to help the corrupted idol program.
The links above are the stories and history for Ritsu since the game tends to jump around with difference characters since there about 38 boys to choose from in the game, but I will try to explain his growth in canon.
Ritsu is from what seems to be a less than ideal family situation; he has one brother older brother, Rei. When he was younger he was bratty and spoiled, demanding his best friend Mao to do whatever he wanted. Mao of course, wanting to take care of his friend, did as he was demanded though he did try to scold him and at least tell him to behave himself. When Rei broke a promise, we are still unsure what the promise was, Ritsu became much more aggressive to his brother. No longer referring to him as Oniichan, but as Anjia, even going as far as using language you use on a stranger and not your family. He even refers to Mao as being his only family.
As time has passed Ritsu has begun to soften a little towards Rei, but it all depends on his mood. Anzu has had a huge impact on this fact since Ritsu really likes the exchange student and enjoys her spoiling him. Over time he seems to have grown and even makes an effort to be more dependable, even attempting to correct his sleep schedule to be more useful to Anzu and his Unit mates.
With new events and Lives, Ritsu seems to be in the process of maturing in a lot of different ways and that is for the better. Though he does still have the same tendencies of wanting to be spoiled and babied in a lot of ways. He does show he is making an effort to move forward.
PERSONALITY:
Ritsu is the definition of spoiled. He's lazy, self-centered and constantly wants everyone to praise and dote on him. He seems like someone that lives only for his own pleasures and knows exactly how to get people to do what he wants. While this is true, Ritsu does have legitimate feelings about the people he cares about and would fight tooth and nail to make sure he doesn't lose what's precious to him. He truly does hold people he loves close to him and wants to protect them, even if his way of doing so seems weird at times.
Lazy to his core Ritsu would rather sleep than doing any work and some proof of that is the fact he was held back a year in school for sleeping and absences. Most times he is found sleeping in random locations or just waking up from a nap. He values his naps enough that he has even threatened, and has, bitten people for disturbing his sleep. Honestly, he rather spend most of his time napping during the day than doing anything else. A lot of this is because of his bad sleep schedule. Being a self-proclaimed vampire, much like his brother, Ritsu states he has more energy at night and he's weak to sunlight, unless he drinks blood then he feels energized although he can eat and drink normal food as well. So that results in him being more active at night and sleeping most of the day. In fact if he doesn't sleep enough during the day his complexion worsens and he has even passed out because of it, causing concern for those around Ritsu.
With this laziness Ritsu also demands attention and wants people to take care of him. So even if he's older than someone he will demand they do things for him and wait on him hand and foot. Even referring to himself as an old man, much like his brother does, he expects others to spoil him. With his cute looks he knows exactly how to manipulate people to do as he wants. Mao, his childhood best friend, is a good example of this. Mao is always fretting over Ritsu and taking care of him even to the point of carrying him around on his back when Ritsu refuses to walk. Even bossing his friend around to spoil him and even feed him. Though Ritsu doesn't limit this spoiled behavior to Mao, he is more than fine with demanding things from even a total stranger. When he doesn't get something he wants he will even pout and complain, especially if the person nags him or fusses about his attitude.
Hating nagging and being told what to do, Ritsu is famous for doing the opposite of what someone tells him to. This just adds to the fact that he acts completely spoiled and self-centered. Truthful, to the point of being rude at times, Ritsu will bluntly tell someone if he hates something and even walk away or ignore their fussing. This is something he does when Mao fusses at him, though most times he just goes to sleep anyway. Since when he's soundly asleep he is deep asleep, unless someone is too loud, then he's the first person to wake up and complain telling them not to disturb his sleep. He even states that he really likes ‘non-annoying' people the best.
When he's not asleep and actually focuses on something he is surprisingly intelligent and confident in his skills. As the strategist of Knights, his idol unit, Ritsu is responsible in coming up with their plans of attacks for their shows. He gets enjoyment out of crushing his “enemies” with his plans. Though it he does find it more interesting if the other group puts up a good fight, although an easy victory is still a good victory to Ritsu. So if he can come up with a plan that has his other unit mates win easily, then he can happily just sit back and watch them achieve victory. With this though he does show in Judgement that when he feels he is lacking in his own plan that he feels remorseful and almost defeated, not wanting to lose. This shows that even though he is lazy he still wants his unit to win and steal victory no matter who they are against. Wanting to show how capable he is to his underclassmen and have them look up to him as a ‘big brother' even.
Playful, he finds it fun to push people's buttons and rile them up in any way he can. Ritsu knows the exact buttons to push to get a reaction out of other. This leads to him teasing people he is close to and getting enjoyment out of their reactions. This can include nicknames, poking at insecurities and even picking at their own nagging behavior towards him. Ritsu does this with Mao at times when the other tries to nag him, resulting Ritsu asking if he is his mother or father. Sometimes this leads to Ritsu going a little far and he does feeling bad, but it's just so much fun to him so he ends up doing it again later.
Despite being a troll in nature, Ritsu does really care about people close to him. He considers Mao his only family and this comes from the fact that his brother, Rei, broke a promise to him and left him. Ritsu is sensitive in that sense, not wanting to lose someone close to him and when he does lose them it hits him hard and he finds trusting them hard. Even telling people he cares about not to welcome bad things, to act like they are dying or something because then it could happen. He does this with Eichi not wanting anything bad to happen to the other. He truly does appreciate and love his friends he is just guarded at times and hides his feelings. Sometimes even using harsh words to express his concern for his friends. For Ritsu knights is a lot like a family as well. He cares for all of them and spends a lot of time with them because of that fact. If he didn't care for them he would have left long ago, so the fact he remains and enjoys their company speaks worlds.
Ritsu can also be stubborn and sensitive he tends to jump to conclusions and assumes things even when they aren't true. A good example of this is when he thinks Mao is treating him differently in Band Ensemble. Even the smallest little things like Mao not using his nickname or not remember the way his favorite juice tastes, results in Ritsu thinking Mao doesn't care about him like he used to. This results in Ritsu projecting his frustration and snapping at his best friend instead of talking about it. In the ends up being okay and Mao lets him know his feelings haven't changed. It shows that Ritsu can be emotional and just the smallest hint of someone he loves not caring about him, is enough to make him anxious and unsure. This shows he is also not good with changes in a couple of ways and that it takes him time to adjust to the thought of change. He needs to be given some kind of reassurance to know that everything is okay or he ends up doubting something and he upsets himself.
Even in reference to Rei, his brother, Ritsu acts like he hates him, but in reality he doesn't completely hate him instead he just can't trust his brother and holds a grudge against him. Since he's stubborn in nature it is hard to get him to admit that he should forgive someone and instead he acts indifferent or annoyed. This causes him to appear tsundere at times with his brother, meaning he says one thing while meaning something else. Even when Rei buys him a coffin Ritsu complains, but still uses the item, saying not using it would be a waste. This carries over to other things that Rei may buy him and he will still use them, like parasols to help with the sun. Ritsu won't admit he likes the presents, or that he enjoys being spoiled even by his brother, even to the point that Arashi makes comments about him not being honest with his feelings. Which in a lot of ways is true, he seems to be good at hiding his negative feelings or changing the subject, this is because he doesn't want to appear to be weak or vulnerable.
So even though it seems Ritsu is just a lazy, spoiled brat; in reality he actually cares a lot about those around him. Though he is not always the best at showing it. Most people that don't know him might assume he is self-centered, but he really does try his best and wants the best for his friends. Whether it is helping sell things with Anzu or even changing his entire sleep schedule to help with Knights more, Ritsu really wants someone to praise him and love him. He really wants others to see that he does care and that he can do his best when he puts in his effort.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Being a self-proclaimed vampire, Ritsu enjoys drinking blood and has a heightened sense of smell as well as having more than average strength. An example of his strength can be seen with his brother, who can lift a coffin by himself. However, Ritsu refuses to lift anything heavier than a pair of chopsticks most of the time. Ritsu is idol in a unit called Knights, and he is intelligent enough to be the strategist for the unit. He can also play the piano and sing. Other than that, he is a normal teenage.
